There have been 330 reported cases of femicide in Serbia since 2010.
The Women’s Support Center organized a program in the capital, Belgrade, as part of the Day of Remembrance for Women Victims of Violence.
The center’s official, Biljana Stepanov, said in a statement that 18 women were killed by their husband or lover in 2023.
Stating that two of the victims were children, Stepanov said, “It was determined that one out of every three murdered women sought help from the authorities.” He said.
Emphasizing that the majority of murders occurred because the authorities did not intervene in time and did not realize the danger, Stepanov emphasized that the killing of women should be considered a serious crime.
As a result of the submission of 8,000 signatures to the Serbian government in 2017, May 18 was declared “Day of Remembrance of Victims of Violence”.
The date of May 18 was chosen due to the killing of 7 women by their husbands and lovers in three days on May 16, 17 and 18, 2015.
