The victims of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina were commemorated in a plaque titled “8372 People Are Not Numbers, Srebrenica” held in Ankara.

The committee was jointly organized by the International Association for Information and Visualization (BİLAL) and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the session was attended by the Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Ankara Adis Alagic, and Deputy Directorate General for the Balkans and Central Europe of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Fatih Ozturk. , BİLAL President Umar Lutfi Turkmenoglu and many other guests.

In the opening speech of the symposium, Turkmenoglu stressed that the genocide in Srebrenica should be understood by all, and that the atrocities committed not only in Srebrenica but all over the world should be remembered.

Ambassador Alajić reminded that the genocide in Srebrenica was committed in a region declared safe by the United Nations, and noted that genocide should not happen anywhere in the world. Chairman Deputy Director General of the Balkans and Central Europe, Deputy Foreign Minister Ozturk also shared the message of Deputy Foreign Minister Yasin Ekrem Serem.

What happened in Srebrenica?

Immediately after the occupation of Srebrenica by Serb forces under the command of Ratko Mladić on 11 July 1995, Bosniak civilians who had taken refuge with Dutch soldiers under UN supervision were handed over to the Serbs. Allowing women and children to go into the area controlled by Bosniak soldiers, the Serbs killed at least 8,372 Bosniak men in forests, factories, and warehouses, and the dead were buried in mass graves.
