A celebration was held in the Turkish Youth Association in Komotini on the occasion of the anniversary of the resistance of the Turks of Western Thrace on January 29, 1988, when the associations were to be closed with a Turkish word in their names.

The event dubbed “January 29 and its Reflections” was moderated by Chairman of the Advisory Council of the Western Minority in Turkish Thrace and Mufti-elect of Komotini Ibrahim Sharif, former deputy governor of Xanthi Musa Fidinli, editor-in-chief of Gündem Hulya Amin, and former deputy Galip Galip, Party of Friendship, Equality and Peace (DEB) Head of the Youth Branch Burak Adel and Zanthi Elected Mufti Mustafa Tramba delivered two speeches.

In his introductory speech, Mufti Ibrahim Sharif stated that the events of January 29 were a turning point for the Turks of Western Thrace and emphasized the role of Ismail Rodoblo, head of the Western Thracian Minority Association of University Graduates, in bringing about the march for rights on January 29, 1988.

Referring to the unfair treatment of minorities in many areas, Sharif said, “Since the Turkish Komotini Youth Federation, the Xanthi Turkish Federation and the Turkish Teachers Union in Komotini had a Turkish word in their names, removing the banners was the last straw.” He said.

On the other hand, Musa Vedinli mentioned that there is constant pressure on the Turks of Western Thrace and drew attention to the fact that members of the minority are not guests in Greece.

Referring to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ visit to Albania in December 2022, Fidinelli said, “They welcome Mitsotakis to Albania with Greek flags. All national channels feature it. Mitsotakis can say we have a problem with our citizens. So can we fly the Turkish flag here?” Whenever the Turkish foreign minister says something about us, the Greek state immediately issues a statement against it.” Use phrases.

Former MP Ghaleb Ghalib also mentioned that the events of January 29 occurred as a result of the repression against the Turks of Western Thrace and emphasized the majority of women participating in the January 29 march.

Pointing out that the Turkish women of Western Thrace filled all the streets, Galib stated that the spirit of resistance on January 29 should not be forgotten.

Referring to the problems experienced by the Turks of Western Thrace in the field of education at that time, Ghalib said: “We continue our struggle today. I hope we will not experience those difficult days again.” He said.

On the other hand, Hulya Emin said that January 29 were two important turning points for the Turks in Western Thrace and that the young population should be informed about what happened on January 29.
