The victims of the “Kapia” massacre, which was carried out by the Serbian forces on May 25, 1995 in the city of Tuzla, northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, commemorate this event.
On the occasion of the anniversary of the massacre, mourning was declared in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the flags were lowered at half mast.
In 1995, 71 people were killed and more than 120 civilians were injured as a result of the bombing of the “Kapia” square by Serb forces on the orders of the then Chief of the General Staff of Republika Srpska Novak Djokic (Novak Djokic).
Djokic, who was a first-class instigator of the massacre that took place in the square called “Kabija” (the gate) because it was the eastern entrance to the city in Tuzla, fled to Serbia after his release to be tried again. 2014, despite being sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2009.
Serbia has not punished the perpetrator of the massacre, one of the most violent crimes committed against civilians in Tuzla, despite the demands of the Bosnia and Herzegovina court.
The Prime Minister of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nermin Nexic, called Serbia on the anniversary of the massacre and demanded that Djokic be handed over to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
May 25 was celebrated as Youth Day in Tuzla until 1995, and it acquired a bitter identity after the massacre of 71 young people.
The city’s residents laid flowers and wreaths at the memorial in Kabija Square and the graves of the massacre victims this morning.
