In a written statement issued by the Bulgarian Interior Ministry, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan presented Minister Ivan Demirjev with the State Medal for Sacrifice and a Certificate of Appreciation at the ceremony of handing over the rescue teams in Turkey. Petr Petrov, head of the department for specialized operational activities of the Plovdiv Territorial Fire Safety and Civil Defense Directorate (Plovdiv), was also awarded the State Order for Distinguished Sacrifice.
The ceremony was held in the Presidential Palace (Bishtibi) in the capital of the Republic of Turkey. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan presented awards to the representatives of the foreign teams that participated in the search and rescue efforts after the severe earthquake.
Demirjev was the only minister from an EU country who attended the event.
The minister flew to Turkey on the Spartan military transport plane of the Bulgarian Air Force, which also carried 3.5 tons of humanitarian aid for the earthquake victims.
Humanitarian aid items consist of tents, sleeping kits and other essential items and materials. Bulgaria is always ready to respond to the demands and needs of the Turkish side within its capabilities.
