Balkans | Chaos in the Albanian opposition

In Albania, two months before local elections, there is uncertainty over who is the legitimate leader of the main opposition party.

The Tirana Court of Appeal overturned the lower court’s decision that the legitimate leader of the Democratic Party was former President Sali Berisha, causing chaos in the opposition.

The Democratic Party split in 2021 between Berisha’s supporters and supporters of former party chairman Lulzim Pasha, and Berisha assumed the presidency after violent protests.

The Court of Appeal overturned the court’s decision that Berisha’s accession to the presidency was legitimate after the resignation of Al-Basha following violent protests.

By a decision of the Court of Appeal, it was ruled that the member of the General Assembly, Inceleged Alibyaj, who represents a faction of the divided Democratic Party (PD), can participate in the local elections with the official logo of the PD party, while Berisha can participate in the elections within the framework of the Freedom House coalition that Formed with the Freedom Party of former President Ilir Meta.

Berisha strongly criticized the decision and announced that they would take the case to the international court.

Berisha, who organized another massive anti-government protest in Tirana on Friday, called the court’s decision an attempt to destroy political pluralism.
