During the Bosnian-Herzegovina War, the 68 civilians killed in the VRS mortar attack on the Markale market in the capital, Sarajevo, were commemorated with a ceremony marking the 29th anniversary of the massacre.
Politicians, relatives of those who lost their lives and survivors attended the ceremony in Markale Market to mark the 29th anniversary of the attack carried out by Serbian soldiers on February 5, 1994.
Ivana Pervolović, Minister of Labour, Social Policies and Migration of Sarajevo County, thanked the citizens who attended the memorial ceremonies and explained that during the war years, people ran away from snipers and hid in basements to protect them from mortar fire.
Noting that the bodies of many people killed in the country have not been found, Pervolović said, “I call on our neighbors to speak out so that the mass graves are found and the families of the victims and Bosnia and Herzegovina find peace.” He said.
The program ended after flowers were left at the market memorial for those who lost their lives in the massacre.
Two massacres in the market
The first massacre, in which 68 people were killed and 144 injured in the Markale market, took place on February 5, 1994. In the second massacre, which was committed by Serb soldiers in the same place on August 28, 1995, 43 civilians were killed and 75 civilians were injured.
In Sarajevo, which was besieged for 44 months during the Bosnian War, 11,541 people were killed, including 1,601 children.
