According to data from the European Statistical Office (Eurostat), Croatia was one of seven countries in the European Union that experienced a population decline last year.
In Croatia, the population decreased by 11,400 from January 1, 2022, to January 1, 2023, from 3,862 million to 3,850 million.
In one year, 33,900 children were born and 57,000 children died in Croatia.
According to records, the number of deaths was 23,100 more than the number of births. The effect of the decline in population was mitigated by the fact that the number of resettlers was 11,700 more than the number of immigrants.
In addition to Croatia, population declines have been recorded in Italy, Bulgaria, Hungary, Greece, Poland and Slovakia, which are members of the European Union.
