The result of the study conducted by the Group of Pharmacies of the European Union (PGEU) with pharmacies in 29 countries, including EU countries, as well as Turkey, Norway, Kosovo and North Macedonia, for the period from November 14 to December 31, has been published.
The problem of providing medicines in European countries has been going on for some time, and it is mentioned that there is a special problem in finding antibiotics, cough syrups for children, and medicines that reduce fever and blood pressure.
Accordingly, more than 600 medicines are scarce in a quarter of these countries, and about 300 medicines in a fifth. Medicine shortages in pharmacies in three-quarters of European countries are much worse than they were a year ago.
The statements of the competent authorities in European countries on health and medicine also support the notifications of pharmacists.
For example, it was reported that there were problems with the supply of nearly 300 drugs in Belgium, 408 drugs in Germany and more than 600 drugs in Austria. In Italy, it was reported that the situation was more serious, and it was very difficult to find more than 3,000 medicines, some of which were different drugs with the same formula.
He stated that the most difficult medicines to obtain from pharmacies throughout Europe are, in particular, antibiotics from the amoxicillin group used to treat respiratory infections, cough medicines used to treat children’s diseases, paracetamol in the form of syrup and some blood pressure medicines.
The cause of the drug problem appears to be a decrease in supply despite an increase in demand.
It is noteworthy that seasonal infections, especially influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), began early and developed more strongly than usual this year in European countries, and throat infections caused by Strep A bacteria are unusually common in children.
Experts believe that the inability of their immune systems to strengthen is the reason for the increase in diseases this winter, as the various viruses that are normally dealt with in daily life cannot be dealt with due to the long periods of closure in the Covid-19 epidemic. It is also reported that drug manufacturers were not ready for high demand in the face of the growing infection, and that the energy crisis in Europe and the high prices of raw materials affected production.
