The United States’ special envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, said he had received assurances from Serbia that he would not oppose elections in northern Kosovo, “otherwise Serbia will suffer the consequences.”
Speaking before the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs, where security and stability in the Western Balkans and the US approach to the region were discussed, Escobar said he hoped there would be significant progress between Kosovo and Serbia this year.
Escobar said the Ohrid agreement between Kosovo and Serbia provides extraordinary opportunities for the two countries to establish peaceful relations with each other, “The agreement requires Serbia to recognize Kosovo’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, national symbols, flag, government documents, certificates, license plates and includes non-obscuration of Kosovo’s membership in international organizations. Kosovo fulfilled its commitment to form a federation of municipalities with a Serb majority. We believe that the two countries should address these issues as soon as possible without any preconditions. They should start doing their part,” he said.
