Regarding cooperation between Turkey and Greece on international platforms, Dendias said, Turkey will support Greece’s candidacy for membership of the interim Security Council in the United Nations in the period from 2025 to 2026. Greece will also support Turkey’s candidacy for the post of Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). He said.

The meeting took place in a positive atmosphere.
According to the information received from the meeting, Turkey and Greece reached an agreement to mutually support Ambassador Suat Khairi-Aka’s candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization and Greece’s candidacy for membership in the UN Security Council 2025-26 for a temporary membership term. Turkey had not previously held the position of Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization.
Following the UN General Assembly presidency of former Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Volkan Bozkir, Ambassador Suat Hayri Aka, Permanent Representative of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), was elected as Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization, the highest level ever in Turkey. in United Nations organizations. It is represented in one of the authorities.
Greece is one of the world’s leading countries in the maritime field. For this reason, Turkey considers it beneficial for Greece to support its candidacy for the post of Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization.
Greece is expected to be a candidate for provisional membership of the UN Security Council for the period 2025-2026, and elections will be held in the UN General Assembly in June 2024.
The elections came in a “clean slate”, as Greece and Denmark are candidates to fill the two vacant positions from the Western European and Others Group (WEOG) on the council for the 2025-2026 period.
Accordingly, since the elections are not contested, Greece will almost certainly gain membership in the United Nations Security Council.
Although Turkey’s support for the candidacy does not effect any change in Greece’s candidacy for membership in the UN Security Council, the commitment to mutual support for the candidacy between Greece and Turkey contributes to the positive agenda between the two countries.
