Balkans | Former Croatian President Josipović: Peace between Russia and Ukraine is a utopia at this stage

Former Croatian President Ivo Josipović stated that the best option for peace is negotiation, but he did not expect the Russo-Ukrainian war to end soon, adding that “Peace between Russia and Ukraine is a utopia at this point”. He said.

Josipović, 66, who served as President of Croatia from 2010-2015, answered AA reporter’s questions at the Eurasian Economic Summit held in Istanbul.

Yosipovich pointed out that there have been many crises, especially border problems, in Eastern Europe for a long time, and emphasized that the Russian-Ukrainian war has exacerbated contentious issues.

Yosipovich stated that he did not expect the Russian-Ukrainian war, which had a negative economic impact on the world, to end in a short time, adding that NATO should become more powerful in the field of intelligence and take precautions before conflicts.

“The region is divided”

Noting that there are many unresolved problems in the region, even if there is no crisis between Russia and Ukraine, the former Croatian leader said, “Unfortunately, our region is filled with a lot of instability. There is uncertainty even on our borders, and that is It is also the case among the member states of the European Union. The region is divided, not only the region but the countries themselves.” He said.

Pointing out that Russia is using its western borders to strengthen its presence in southeastern Europe, Josipovich said that politicians are insufficient in generating ideas and finding solutions to the current crises.

Russia’s attacks may continue.

“We are currently in a high security situation.” Josipovich said that how the crisis between Russia and Ukraine will be resolved is unpredictable.

The best option for peace is negotiation and immediate peace, but peace between Russia and Ukraine is utopia at this point. Unfortunately, Russia’s attacks may continue, and the future is very uncertain. Despite all international agreements, this is the real one. Everyone wants a peaceful solution, but from my side peace is very far away.” Use the phrase.

“NATO MUST UNITE”

Referring to the need for NATO to be in unity and stability, Josipović also expressed his belief in finding a solution to the conflict between countries such as Turkey, Finland and Sweden.

The former president said that for a safe Europe, these countries need to join NATO.

Having the notion that further arming Ukraine is not a solution in and of itself, Yosipovich said, “The political and humanitarian crisis are two separate stories, but armaments alone cannot be the only solution. Negotiations will be the most accurate outcome.” He said.

Referring to the conflicts in countries like Syria, Afghanistan and Libya, which lasted for many years, Josipović said, they were all wrong and ended worse than expected.

In order to find a solution, Josipović said, “NATO should take precautionary measures by seeing areas where conflict might arise and by enhancing intelligence.” Share his opinion.
