Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said he plans to legalize same-sex marriage in the new period.
“Same-sex marriage will happen at some point and that’s part of our strategy.” “Greek society is ready for this,” Mitsotakis said in an interview with Bloomberg.
Same-sex marriage is legal in much of Western Europe, but not in Italy and Greece, where civil partnerships exist, and in most other European Union member states in Eastern Europe.
In 2022, the medical practice described as “conversion therapy” for minors is banned by Mitsotakis’ government. It also overturned the ban on gay men donating blood.
LGBT groups in Greece have long campaigned for “full family rights” and demanded stricter enforcement of what they describe as anti-discrimination laws.
The first steps towards legalizing same-sex partnerships in the country were taken during the rule of the left-wing SYRZIA party led by Alexis Tsipras, despite opposition from the Greek Orthodox Church as well as conservatives.
