A bill allowing human corpses to be composted after death has been approved in the US state of New York.
According to what was reported in the American newspapers, the New York Governor Kathy HochulSigning a bill to legalize corpse composting in the state.
In this way, after people in New York died, their bodies could be turned into natural fertilizer.
In said process, the corpse is placed in a “coffin” containing plant materials such as sawdust, alfalfa, and straw.
The herbal blend in the coffin provides a suitable environment for naturally occurring microbes to quickly and effectively decompose the body. Microbes break down the body within one month, on average.
This is an alternative to funeral preferences for environmentally sensitive people, stated Katrina Speed, founder of the company called “Recompose”, based in the USA, which provides a service for composting human cadavers.
Speed mentioned that this method, also called “composting,” releases less carbon than burial or incineration.
In the US, Washington state first legalized the “composting of human corpses” in 2019. This law was passed in Colorado and Oregon in 2021, and in Vermont and California in 2022.
