Kosovar Prime Minister Albin Kurti called for an increase in NATO’s military presence in his country.
Kurti told the German newspaper “Welt” that the increase in the number of NATO forces and military equipment in Kosovo will enhance security and peace in his country and throughout the Western Balkans.
Noting that Kosovo is currently increasing its defense expenditure and the number of soldiers, Kurti said, “The increase in the number of soldiers in NATO’s peacekeeping force KFOR will support our efforts in the field of defence.” He rated it.
Albin Kurti pointed out that the establishment of barricades in 4 districts in northern Kosovo, the presence of masked faces here, people wearing Wagner mercenaries and Night Wolves emblems on their uniforms, and the stationing of Serb soldiers along the Kosovo border indicate the need for additional soldiers from NATO.
Tension between Kosovo and Serbia
Tensions between Kosovo and Serbia escalated after Kosovo police detained former Serbian police officer Dejan Pantec. In response to Bantik’s detention, Kosovo Serbs have been standing guard at roadblocks they have set up at border crossings since 10 December.
Following the call of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on the night of December 29, after the decision to arrest Pantek turned into house arrest, the removal of barricades in northern Kosovo began.
The European Union, NATO and the United States of America called for de-escalation of tension in northern Kosovo and the removal of roadblocks. Serbia has asked the NATO peacekeeping force in Kosovo (KFOR) to deploy Serbian army and police in northern Kosovo.
Serbia considers Kosovo, which unilaterally declared its independence in 2008, to be its territory.
Serbia and Kosovo, which clash periodically, are trying to find a common way to normalize relations, and eventually the two countries get to know each other, within the scope of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue process initiated in 2011 with the mediation of the European Union.
