Balkans | Kosovo Assembly commemorates the victims of the Srebrenica genocide

At the Kosovo Assembly, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, described as Europe’s greatest human tragedy after World War II.

The Kosovo Assembly deputies wore scarves with the slogan “Flower of Srebrenica”, symbolizing the Srebrenica massacre.

Kosovo Parliament Speaker Glauc Konjovka told the session that he hoped the perpetrators of the crimes in Srebrenica would be punished.

Stating that the crimes committed will never expire, Konjovka said, “Genocide and crimes against humanity are not crimes that will never end. So we hope that one day the criminals will get the punishment they deserve.” He said.

Bahrim Šbani, the Bosnian MP for the Kosovo Council, said that more than 8,000 innocent Bosniaks were brutally murdered in Central Europe in a few days.

Shabani pointed out that the perpetrators of the horrific genocide deny the crimes they committed. He said.

The Kosovo Assembly approved the draft resolution condemning the 1995 Srebrenica genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2021.

What happened in Srebrenica?

After the occupation of Srebrenica by Serb forces led by Ratko Mladić on 11 July 1995, Bosniak civilians who had taken refuge with Dutch soldiers inside the UN were handed over to the Serbs.

Allowing women and children access to the area controlled by Bosniak soldiers, the Serbs massacred no fewer than 8,372 Bosniak men in forest areas, factories, and warehouses. The Bosnian dead were buried in mass graves.

After the war, the victims whose bodies were found were buried in mass graves in an effort to find the missing in a ceremony held at the Potocari Memorial Cemetery on 11 July each year after their identification.

Potocari Memorial Cemetery contains the graves of 6,721 genocide victims.
