The new mayors who took office in the early local elections held on April 23 in the municipalities of northern Kosovo, where Serbs live heavily, are taking the oath.
Erden Atik, the new mayor of Mitrovica, will be sworn in at the end of the week, while Ilir Beci and Izmir Zekeri will be sworn in as mayors of Zvecan and Zubin Potok on Thursday, under tight security.
And while Serbia announced that it would not recognize ethnic Albanian mayors who took office in elections boycotted by Serbs, the United States called on Kosovo politicians to stay away from politics and perform their duties as interim mayors.
After the swearing-in ceremony, Ateeq announced that he would work at random to normalize conditions in the municipality.
The deputy head of the Serbian list, Igor Simic, said that with the swearing in of the new mayor from the Vitevendosje party, the occupation had officially begun and that the Serbs would decide when this occupation would end.
Simic said they had given Kosovar Prime Minister Albin Kurti until June 1 to end the repression and arrests against Serbs, and declared that the Serb population in northern Kosovo would protect themselves in every way.
