Balkans |  North Macedonian Turkish Education Day was celebrated in Edirne

The North Macedonian Turkish Education Day was celebrated with an event held at Trakea University (TU).

The celebration ceremony was held at the Balkan Congress Center by the Union of Macedonian Students Studying in Turkey, under the auspices of the Governor of Edirne and Tutu.

The event started with minutes of silence, the national anthem and the singing of the national anthem of North Macedonia.

Aktan Ago, Consul General of North Macedonia in Istanbul, said in his speech that the Macedonian Turks received the right to Turkish education on December 21, 1944.

Pointing out that since 2007, December 21 has been celebrated as the national holiday of the Turks living in North Macedonia, Agu said, “This holiday began to be celebrated thanks to the Turkish Democratic Party, with the decision published in the Official Gazette dated Feb. 15, 2007. Since Then, the Macedonian Turks celebrate the 21st December Turkish Education Day with various activities across the country, he said.

TÜ Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Zafer also stated that Trakya University is one of the first institutions in Turkey to celebrate Turkish Education Day on December 21.

Zafer explained that many students from the Balkans study at Trakya University, “When we travel to the Balkans, meeting our alumni gives us pride and excitement. Our university, which leaves no place unchanged in this geography, is making progress in this regard with each passing day.” He said.

After the speeches, Hisham Amin, President of the North Macedonia Student Union, and the students presented shields to the representatives of the institutions that contributed to the event.

The head of the Federation of Rumeli-Balkan Associations Camuran Atakan and his deputy Şani Ozgur presented the painting, which depicts migration from the Balkans and the photo taken at the Kapıkule Border Gate, to the Director of Culture and Tourism of Edirne Kemal Suetürk.

The program ended with a concert performed by Rumeli Akram.
