In local elections in Albania Sunday, the Socialist Party led by Prime Minister Edi Rama declared victory in 50 out of 61 municipalities.
In major cities, including Tirana, as votes continue to be counted, the Socialist Party is reported to be leading the race.
The Albanian press wrote that the “Together We Will Win” coalition, formed by opposition parties, won in 11 municipalities.
Former President Salih Berisha, one of the leaders of the opposition coalition, accused Prime Minister Rama of using the mafia to manipulate the electoral process.
144 mayors and 23,762 city council candidates contested the election.
In the elections, where the number of eligible voters was 3,650,550, the turnout remained at 34 percent.
