Balkans | Rama: We should in no way contribute to Serbia’s exit from the European Union

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said that it is necessary to increase Serbia’s participation instead of contributing to its exit from the European Union.

Speaking to Euractiv, Rama said that Western Balkan countries must meet the requirements to join the EU to serve their own interests.

Rama stated that the current geopolitical conditions, along with the coronavirus pandemic and the threats of climate change, have increased awareness of the region’s importance and sensitivity to the EU.

Referring to the importance of the EU-Western Balkans Summit held in Tirana, the capital of Albania, Rama said, “Who would have imagined a few years ago that the EU would come out of its borders and that Council members would come to a country outside the EU and hold a summit?” he said.

Rama stressed that the war in Ukraine also affected the geopolitical conditions of the region, recalling that Russia was influential in the countries of the Western Balkans, especially in the regions where the Serbs are present.

Referring to Serbia being heavily criticized for not imposing sanctions on Russia, Rama said: “We must realize the danger. We should in no way contribute to Serbia’s exit from the European Union. On the contrary, we need to make it more involved.” He said.

Noting the importance of dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, Rama said, “Considering that a war broke out between the two countries recently, we can understand why it is so difficult to find a solution.” He said.
