The National Assembly of Republika Srpska (NSRS), one of the two entities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, has re-adopted legislation on the criminalization of defamation.
While 47 deputies out of 63 who participated in the vote on the amendment that was made in the penal code of the entity supported the arrangement, 16 deputies voted against it.
The aforementioned list was met with discontent from the local and international press and institutions.
Sinisa Vukilic, member of the Journalists Club of Banja Luka and editor of the capital portal, said: “Twenty years ago, Republika Srpska was ahead of the countries of the region, even the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in just one law. Today, after more than twenty years, the government wants to take away the only thing that stands before others, it wants to make slander a crime. The Republika Srpska government has turned its back on the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the OSCE, the Association of Journalists of Bosnia and Herzegovina…”
