Farmers in Romania and Bulgaria have staged demonstrations against the European Union’s decision to allow Ukrainian grain to invade local markets.
Hundreds of farmers gathered in Bucharest, the Romanian capital, holding banners saying “The European Union ignores us”. Thousands of farmers across Romania and Bulgaria closed traffic and border checkpoints with tractors.
Pointing out that the €56.3 million aid announced by Brussels last month is not enough, the farmers stressed that if the decision to cut grain quotas and tariffs is not reversed, they will face serial bankruptcy. The head of the Federation of Bulgarian Grain Producers Ilya Prodanov said that if the decision is not reversed, they will plan big business with farmers in neighboring countries.
As a result of the demonstrations organized by Polish farmers in the past weeks, the Polish Minister of Agriculture, Henryk Kowalczyk, resigned last Wednesday.
