Bulgarian President Rumen Radev presented shields of honor to rescuers returning from Turkey at the traditional “Fireman of the Year” ceremony.
Speaking at the ceremony at the Central Officers Club in Sofia, Radev said that the Bulgarian rescue teams who rushed to help after the earthquake in Turkey showed the new face of Bulgaria, working in unity, selflessness and courage.
Pointing out that Bulgaria was the first country in the European Union (EU) to extend a helping hand to Turkey on the first day of the “Catastrophe of the Century”, Radev emphasized that his country acted like a true European by running to help with the approach of neighborhood and humanity.
Radev received members of the Fire Brigade, Civil Defense, Sofia Municipal Rescue Unit, 16th Air Force Base, Military Medical Academy, Bulgarian Red Cross Organization (BÇK) and National Volunteer Union who participated in the rescue efforts in Turkey, and presented shields of honor to all workers.
Stressing that this devastating earthquake that struck neighboring and friendly Turkey shows that tolerance cannot always be expected from nature, Radev called on all institutions in the country to review their preparations and equipment for such situations and make the necessary investments.
The Ambassador of Turkey to Sofia, Aylin Etcock, who attended the ceremony, also reminded that President Radev was the first head of state to respond to the Republic of Turkey’s call for help.
Expressing his country’s gratitude to the Bulgarian rescue teams, Isserkok said, “You have shed light on our darkest and saddest nights, saved the lives of hundreds of our people, and occupied a special place in the hearts of the Turkish people.” He said.
