According to the statement issued by the Bulgarian Red Cross (BAC), the PAC has sent more than 24 tons of humanitarian aid to the victims of the devastating earthquake that struck Syria on February 6, 2023. The aid sent by four trucks is organized in partnership with the General Directorate of Fire Safety and Civil Protection and the Emergency Response Coordination Center of the European Union Commission.
The aid consists of non-cash donations from Bulgarian citizens and businesses as part of a national aid campaign to help earthquake victims.
On March 16, 2023, 33 tons of additional supplies that were collected as part of the national aid campaign began to be loaded to the Coordination Center, and are expected to leave for the Lebanese capital, Beirut, by cargo plane. There, the transport vehicles will be offloaded by representatives of the Lebanese Red Cross and transported to Syria by a humanitarian aid convoy.
The Syrian Arab Red Crescent, which has access to all areas affected by the earthquake, will handle the humanitarian aid that the Coordination and Cooperation Center sends to Syrian territory, and will transfer materials donated by Bulgarian citizens and companies to those in need.
So far, the CCC has donated around 310 thousand euros of spare materials to Turkey and Syria, as well as 224 parcels of materials to Turkey, which were collected in the national aid campaign to support the earthquake victims.
