The Council of Europe has called for the official recognition of 11 July as an “international day of remembrance” for the victims of the Srebrenica genocide.
In a written statement, Dunja Mijatović, the Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights, stated that the time had come to officially recognize July 11 as the “International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Srebrenica Genocide”.
Referring to the killing of 8,372 Bosniaks during the Srebrenica genocide, Mijatović noted that this genocide is one of the darkest chapters in European history.
Pointing out that this genocide was recorded by different courts, Mijatović said: “Unfortunately, many people are unaware of this genocide and some deny it. This is an insult to the victims and a serious threat to justice and peace in the region.” Use phrases.
Mijatović confirmed that the mothers of Srebrenica have been asking for justice for 28 years
