Balkans | The desire to immigrate in the world is at its highest level in the past ten years

In a new study looking at migratory movements around the world, it has been observed that people’s desire to migrate has reached its highest levels in the past ten years.

Research conducted by the American Gallup polling company revealed that in 2021, 16 percent of adults in the world (about 900 million) would like to leave their country permanently if they can.

It was mentioned in the research that the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced migration rates in recent years, but it has not prevented people from wanting to migrate.

In the research, which is based on interviews with nearly 127,000 adults in 122 countries, it was reported that in the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, people’s desire to migrate reached the highest level in the past 10 years.

The period covered by the study is said to coincide with the world’s slow return to normalcy in 2021.

Increased willingness to migrate in parts of sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and Asia

Demand for immigration has also risen to the highest levels in the past decade in already migrant regions such as Latin America and the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia and the Commonwealth of Independent States.

In the research, which noted that this situation is not true all over the world, the desire to migrate decreased significantly in both the countries of the European Union and East Asia. It recorded its lowest level in the past ten years.

He stated in the study that nearly half or more of the adult population in 13 countries from most parts of the world, excluding North America and European Union countries, would like to move to another country if possible.

Although most people would like to immigrate to the United States, interest in the country is waning.

The research stated that the United States has maintained its advantage of being the most desirable country to immigrate since 2007 for potential immigrants in 2021 as well. It has been suggested that the reason for this may be the anti-immigrant rhetoric in the administration of former US President Donald Trump in part deterring potential immigrants.

The research also included information that 8 percent (about 74 million) of adults who want to immigrate want to reside in Canada.
