The five early general elections in Bulgaria, caused by the two-year-old political crisis, cost €500 million.
According to the report published by the General Institute for Environmental Research, large expenditures were placed on the treasury due to the ineffective work of the last four short-lived parliaments, which could not form a government.
Expenses were diverted to several items such as preparation for the election process, ballot paper printing, stationery costs for the elections, logistical support and staff training.
While the cost of 5 general and 1 presidential elections in the country since 2021 amounted to 500 million euros, the largest expenditure was the wages of workers at election venues.
In Bulgaria, which has a population of 6.52 million, 5 million paper ballots were printed in each of the last elections. The expenses of these cards amounted to 750 thousand euros each time in the last 5 elections.
Turnout, which fell to 40 percent in the last elections, is expected to be lower in the new snap elections.
