MEPs sharply criticized the EU Commission for its indifference to the rejectionism issues involving Greece.
With the participation of the Vice-President of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas and the member of Home Affairs Ylva Johansson, a session took place in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament, in which the issue of migration and allegations of response in relation to Greece were discussed.
Lawmakers have sharply criticized Schinas and Johansson for their silence in the face of repeated cases, even though there is plenty of evidence that Greece is pushing migrants back.
Referring to the photographs of 12 asylum seekers who were returned by the New York Times on May 19, the deputies stated that this case, like others, would be covered up by Greece as a result of the so-called investigation.
It wasn’t the first New York Times report. If it had been the first, we would have accepted the ‘work on it, investigate’ answer, said German MP Birgit Seibel. “It’s about handling pushbacks, it’s about encouragement. It’s good that the Greek authorities are investigating this, but I already know the outcome. It will be like the others.” He said.
Dutch MP Sophie Annette Wilde said the images in the New York Times were too stark and clear to warrant any investigation.
Noting that the Greek coast guard was recently photographed placing a 6-month-old infant on board, and the same people were registered upon their arrival in Turkey, Instfield said, “Where is the humanity in this? Where is the sense of urgency in the body? This is not “European way of life”. I have no confidence in the commission that you will solve this problem. ” He said.
Schinas, a vice-president of the European Union Commission and a Greek citizen, said the photos in The New York Times were published two days before Greece’s general elections, that he had no knowledge of the photos, and that such incidents were unacceptable.

The deputies also criticized the members of the Commission for the poor conditions in refugee reception centers, especially in Greece, and the length of procedures regarding asylum requests, and the walls that are being built.
On the other hand, Schinas mentioned that reception centers with European standards have been opened on the Greek islands and indicated that this development is the reason for his pride because he is a Greek citizen. Schinas also indicated that he opposes the practice of a wall, and that the structures in question are not walls, but “watch posts” to monitor entrances and exits.
