The elected Mufti of Komotini, Ibrahim Sharif, who is also the Chairman of the Advisory Council of the Western Turkic Minority in Thrace, mentioned the outcome of the case that was brought and won in relation to the Mufti, in a post on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday, December. fourteenth.
Ibrahim Sharif, accused of the crime of “extortion of office”, applied to the European Court of Human Rights after exhausting local remedies, and the court convicted Greece and ordered him to pay $10,000 in compensation.
Ibrahim Sharif shared the following on his Twitter account:
“23 years ago today, with the decision made as a result of our application before the European Court of Human Rights, that I was sentenced to 8 months in prison in relation to the Mufti, Greece was unanimously ordered to pay $10,000 in compensation.”
How did the process start and how was it completed
We share some parts of an article in the national press of Turkey at the time about the case of the elected Mufti of Komotini Ibrahim Sharif before the European Court of Human Rights.
Some parts of the news text written by Gurbet Gökçe for Milliyet on 12-19-1999 are as follows:
The Greek government did not recognize Ibrahim Sharif, who was elected mufti by the Turkish minority in Komotini in 1995, and appointed Miko Jamali in his stead. Not only that, the Greek government has accused Ibrahim Sharif of “occupying the mufti’s place and declaring himself a mufti by wearing the abaya” and has filed a lawsuit against him. The trial began in 1995 and lasted for five years. The Thessaloniki Bedayet Court convicted Ibrahim Sharif and sentenced him to eight months in prison. Based on Ibrahim Sharif’s appeal to the Court of Appeal, the sentence was reduced to six months. Sharif, who paid a fine of nearly $4,000, has again appealed to the Greek Supreme Court. However, the Supreme Court also found Sharif guilty. The Mufti of Komotini, who had exhausted domestic remedies, applied to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
The European Court of Human Rights decided that there was an injustice and decided to take up the case. The court announced the outcome of the case and ordered Greece to pay a fine of 2 million 700 thousand dirhams to Ibrahim Sharif.”
