The Albanian court decided to release the citizens of Russia and Ukraine who were arrested while trying to enter a military facility in the country on August 20, 2022.

In the statement from the Elbasan First Instance Court, it was noted that it was decided to drop the arrest warrant for Mikhail Zorin, Fedir Alpatov and Svetlana Timofeeva, who are under investigation.

The statement, which stipulated the release of Russian citizen Timofeeva and Ukrainian Fedir Alpatov, said that investigations against them would continue freely.

The statement said that another Russian citizen, Mikhail Zorin, had been placed under house arrest.

On August 20, 2022, Russian citizen Timofeeva and two other Russian and Ukrainian people were arrested while trying to enter a military facility in Albania, and two Albanian soldiers, who were exposed to the paralyzing gas used by these people, were injured.

The Elbasan Court of First Instance had decided to detain two Russians and a Ukrainian as a security precaution in the hearing held on August 24.

In September, the Dirac Court of Appeal decided to continue detaining 3 foreign nationals.

In January 2023, the Russian authorities demanded the extradition of Timofeeva from Albania as a person wanted for the crime of “illegal acquisition of information constituting a state secret”.

Timofeeva did not agree to extradite her to Russia and demanded that she remain in the Albanian lands. Accordingly, the Elbasan First Instance Court rejected the extradition request submitted by the Russian authorities on April 14, 2023.

The detained foreigners are accused of “attacking an officer on duty” and “giving and obtaining classified information” with collaboration.
