Balkans | Turkish wrestlers want to reach the top of Europe in Zagreb

The Senior European Wrestling Championships will be held in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, from 17 to 23 April 2023.

Turkey, which broke the medal record at the tournament in Hungary last year and became the women’s European champion and number two in Europe as a team in the men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman, is aiming to take that success to an even higher level.

Most of the athletes and the medalist are from ASKİ

In the major European wrestling championships, 14 athletes from the ASKİ Spor Wrestling team will be on the carpet in Zagreb. Founded in 1923, the Turkish Wrestling Federation has won a total of 338 medals, 139 bronzes, 88 silvers and 102 golds in the European Championships.

Ankara Metropolitan Municipality ASKİ Sports Club, which was founded in 1985 and opened its wrestling branch in 2001, contributed to the national team by winning 76 medals in the European Championships in which they participated. ASKİ Sports Club, the team that presented the most athletes to the national teams and won the most medals (76 in total, including 41 gold, 12 silver and 23 bronze), is experiencing great excitement ahead of the Senior European Championship.

The Başkent team, which includes 14 athletes in the national team, is determined to add new players to its collection of national medals.

Turkish heavyweights at the top of Europe

The Turkish national wrestling team, which is indisputably the largest in Europe in terms of heavyweight, is the only country to have won 5 championships with Yasemin Adar Yigit, 9 championships with Taha Akgül and 11 championships with Riza Kayalıp. Our pride in women, Yasemin Adar Yigit for the sixth time in Zagreb, Taha Akgül for the tenth time and Rıza Kayalıp for the twelfth time, want to stay at the top of Europe. It is very difficult to break Taha Akçıl’s record. The goal of Olympic, world and European champion Taha Akgül, who will be on the carpet at the European Wrestling Championships, is to win a gold medal for the tenth time. Having reached the top of Europe with a weight of 125 kilograms, Akgul overtook the successful names of the Bulgarian freestyle swimmer Valentin Yordanov (7) and the Russian Bovisa Saitev (6). Taha Akgül, who went down in history as a 9-time European champion and whose record seems very difficult to break from now on, wants to be the oldest in Europe for the tenth time.

RIZA KAYAALP’s goal is to equal KARELIN’s record

Competing in the 130 kg category, Reza Kayab’s goal is to equal the record of former Russian wrestler Alexander Karelin, 12-time European Greco-Roman style champion. National wrestler Kayaalp, who has 11 championships, will share his record with Karalin if he wins a gold medal in Zagreb. Turkey’s history record Last year, the Turkish national wrestling team made 10 finals for the first time in the European Wrestling Championships held in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. Last year, it broke the record by winning 17 medals, 7 of which were gold. While the Turkish women’s national wrestling team became European champions, the men’s freestyle team and the Greco-Roman team finished second in Europe.

The Turkish national team, which will compete in the Grand European Wrestling Championships to be held in Zagreb from April 17 to 23, 2023, consists of the following athletes: Women’s freestyle: 50kg Evin Demirhan Yavuz (ASKİ) 53kg Zeynep Yetgil (İBB) 55kg Bediha Gün ( ASKİ) 57kg Elvira Kamaloğlu (İBB) 59kg Eda Tekin (İzzet Tekeli Akademi SK) 62kg Selvi İlyasoğlu (Koycegiz BLD.
